Conservative power dressing marked the 1980s.
After two decades of eclectic fashion, society was prime for the Reagan years. Yuppies--hardworking, successful, young business people--were exalted. Wealth and success could be displayed. Daytime fashion leaned on the traditional side, but evening fashion was sparkly and extravagant.
Franchises went international.
Calvin Klein, Giorgio Armani, and Ralph Lauren were household names. The three revolutionized department store marketing, providing everything from underwear and perfume to shoes and evening wear. Designer names and logos were emblazoned on clothing. Japanese designers became prominent, often due to their outlandish outfits that hid shape and proportion.
There was a new emphasis on sportswear. People were in love with lycra, the unisex fabric that accented every toned muscle. Fashion extended even to the Olympics.
Dapper defined the look of the 1980s.
In the east and west, for black or white, young or old, there was a new emphasis on formality.
